Patient centricity has long been at the heart of medical innovation, but today shapes its future
Clarivate, a global leader in providing trusted information and insights to accelerate the pace of innovation, announced the launch of its Achieving patient centricity at scale: a holistic and data-driven approach whitepaper.
Patient centricity is hardly a new concept for the life sciences industry, but it has never been more urgent or achievable than it is today.
Traditionally, pharmas, medtechs and diagnostics companies focused on serving the needs of other customers – physicians and payers. That was what moved sales volumes and ultimately funded the pipeline of future medical innovations. Understanding the patient experience and catering to patient needs was seen as a nice-to-have, a potential differentiator, but not an essential starting point for medical innovation.
We’re no longer living in a world in which a patient focus is optional. Converging trends in technology, drug development, the regulatory landscape and the commercial market for medicines are making a deep understanding of patients, as people living complex lives, mission-critical for biopharmas and medtechs today.
Building a solidly patient-centred organisation, rooted in patient needs and driven to realise better patient outcomes, can be enabled by four supporting pillars:
• De-identified patient data inputs, along with the technologies and expertise needed to translate them into actionable insights.
• Patient involvement from development through deployment, on everything from clinical trial design to patient engagement.
• A CX design approach, privileging the patient experience in developing products and solutions that drive better patient outcomes.
• A real world mindset toward understanding patient populations, encompassing patients of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities with diverse unmet needs.
This paper focuses on the first of these pillars, with the aim of exploring how data and technological transformation can support a truly patient-centric approach to medical innovation.
Understanding patients at scale requires a data-driven approach. With the availability of de-identified real world data sources, including claims and electronic health records (EHR) data as well as de-identified social data and online patient registries, and the application of machine learning methodologies to these datasets, life science companies can get granular patient intelligence at scale. Paired with company or publicly available data sets, these tools can be applied to a wide range of challenges – from understanding the size and composition of a patient population to charting how patients progress through diagnosis and treatment, identifying critical drivers of patient behaviour and barriers to care, generating evidence of the value of new treatments to speed patient access to them, and enabling personalised engagement across patient cohorts large and small.
Companies that can adopt a truly patient-centred approach and be responsive to patient needs and preferences will be better positioned for success, and better-equipped to realise better patient outcomes in the long haul.
